Our Stories - Katie Coull

Little Katie Coull is swapping a hospital bed for an out-of-this-world encounter with Buzz Lightyear at Disneyland in Paris.

The five-year-old from Aberdeen has endured long illness and wearisome medical tests this year.

Just after her third birthday, wee Katie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which means that her pancreas no longer produces insulin.

In recent months, inquiries into a stomach complaint meant she had to suffer 60 finger pricks to take blood in just a few short days.

Proud mum, Catherine, reckoned she deserved a treat when she got out of hospital.

And she “screamed” when she discovered that the Teddy Bear Foundation was prepared to fund a £750 trip for mother and daughter to Disneyland Paris.

The pair will board a jet at Aberdeen Airport later this year for the direct flight to the French capital.  Then, they’ll stay at the Hotel Cheyenne, a Wild West themed hotel on the Disney site.

They are sure to meet up with Minnie and Mickey Mouse as well as the stars of Toy Story 3, Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Said Catherine:”Words cannot describe what this means to us.

“Katie went through a very unpleasant experience in hospital but she never complained once.

“I just thought she deserved a bit of fun in her life after enduring the bad times so bravely.

“There is just no way we could afford to take her to Euro Disney so I screamed when I got an email saying that the Teddy Bear Foundation would pick up the bill.

“It’s not just the immediate impact of these nice experiences – it is the longer-lasting effect it has on families like us.  I can’t thank the charity enough.”

This is the second treat which the Foundation has been happy to provide for the Coulls.

Two years ago, the charity paid for an outing in a giant pink limo which Katie used to see touring the streets near her home.

“Tina’s Taxi” Katie would shout, believing that the big vehicle had shot straight from her favourite Cbeebies show.

“She was so excited,” said Catherine.  “It came with ‘High School Musical’ on the side, which is another of her favourite programmes.

“She had a brilliant day.”

Mickey, Buzz Lightyear, Woody and friends await Katie in Disneyland Paris.
