Our Stories - Round Tablers' Christmas Bonus

Santa’s flight managed to arrive in a snow storm at the East Renfrewshire village of Eaglesham.

As most of the country was grinding to a halt, even blizzard conditions could not stop Father Christmas landing his sleigh on the village green for the start of Christmas Week.

The local Round Table in Eaglesham traditionally arranges for Santa to tour the historic village on a sledge, pulled by a tractor.

This year, he delivered some extra good news, too, as Round Table members raised over £4000 for The Teddy Bear Foundation.

Eaglesham Round Table decided to help the Foundation by staging a Sportsman’s Dinner in October, featuring after-dinner speakers including former Dunfermline manager, Jim Leishman.

The evening also witnessed some unusual auction items and lucky draw prizes on offer.  Reflecting the agricultural nature of the area, one item up for grabs was “The hire of a digger and a man” for a day.  One other lucky Round Tabler won a huge sack of potatoes!

At Christmas, once all the funds from the night were gathered in, the Round Table revealed that the fun evening in the Eglinton Arms Hotel had raised £4,110.

And they invited some of the children who have benefited from Teddy Bear funding this year to go on a whistlestop tour of Eaglesham with Santa in the heavy snow we had at Christmas.

Parents Support Group for Dyslexia is based in East Renfrewshire, providing help to mums and dads whose children are affected by the reading disorder.

They organise evening meetings in council-run halls and the Teddy Bear money helps pay for the hall rental.

A spokesman for the Teddy Bear Foundation described the sum raised by Eaglesham Round Table as “a fantastic achievement.”

He added:”We did not imagine that a night among friends could raise as much as £4110.

“The fabulous sum raised by Round Table members will make a lot of children very happy.

“We will use the funds wisely to bring some cheer into the lives of kids who deserve it most.”
