Our Stories - Pinewood School

The Teddy Bear Foundation is getting things going at Pinewood School – by helping to buy a minibus capable of taking a wheelchair.

Due to its age, the West Lothian school’s current 10 year-old transport doesn’t have a lift and can’t take a wheelchair.

That means that any kids with major mobility problems are unable to travel with their classmates on school outings to parks or theatres.

The school’s amazing fundraising team found themselves short of £2605 in their bid to find the £26,464 needed to buy a new state-of-the-art bus.

And in stepped the Teddy Bear Foundation with the balance.

Lynsey Findlay, the award-winning treasurer of Pinewood’s Parent Staff Association explained:”Our kids go on a lot of trips, for swimming lessons, to community centres and to the shops.

“Because of the limitations of our transport, kids in wheelchairs have to travel by alternative means, like taxis.

“We are a special needs primary so we want to have everything we need – and that includes a wheelchair-ready bus.

“Now the children can all go together.  It’s taken us over a year to raise the money and we were struggling right at the end.

“I am so relieved that the Teddy Bear Foundation has come up with the last bit of money we needed.”

Pinewood, in Blackburn, is West Lothian's only school for children aged between five and 18 who have a range of additional needs, including severe learning difficulties, specific syndromes and Autism.

The Parent Staff Association regularly raise funds on their own, by organising a summer fayre, a ladies pamper night and a 'dress-down' day.

The Teddy Bear Foundation had earlier presented Pinewood with a £1700 donation, which was used to take children out to panto in Edinburgh and other fun days out.

Lynsey has been recognised nationally for her brilliant fundraising activities.  She won the title “Selfless Mum of the Year” in a UK-wide competition organised by Tesco.

And her selflessness was reflected in her prize – gifts for the school and a cracking day out at Beecraigs Country Park, near Linlithgow, for the kids.

All aboard! Pinewood School pupils prepare to road-test their new bus.
