Our Stories - Mark Thompson Story
Karen Thompson is arguably the first parent to turn the tables on the Teddy Bear Foundation – in the nicest possible way.
We provided funding for her eight-year-old son, Mark, who suffers from cerebral palsy and some breathing difficulties.
His new wheelchair provided no shelter from the wind and rain and he would become so upset, he’d often hold his breath and throw up.
So we paid £130 for a custom-made weather canopy, which shelters him from the elements and allows him to go out in all weathers.
And we provided a further £200 to have his new bedroom decorated with his favourite characters, Woody and Buzz Lightyear from “Toy Story.”
But the Teddy Bear connection with the Motherwell family did not end there.
Karen was so overwhelmed by the gesture, she resolved to raise funds for the Teddy Bear Foundation so that another family can gain the benefit.
And recently, she proudly sent us a cheque for £282, almost as much as the Thompsons had received from us.
Said Karen:”I just wanted to say thank you for your kind donation.
“I think the Teddy Bear Foundation is absolutely fabulous.
“Now that we’ve got Mark’s canopy, we’ve got a very happy boy on our hands – and a happy family, too.
“I raffled a teddy bear from Harrods and a bottle of Champagne. I didn’t expect to raise so much but I think a lot of people knew Mark’s story and what he has been through.
“He’s a wonderful wee boy. He was born 14 weeks prematurely and we did not think he was going to make it.
“But he’s a wee fighter and he did make it.
“I know we really appreciated the Teddy Bear donation. I’d love to think another family in similar circumstances might now benefit from our raffle money.”
A spokesman for the charity said:”We will try and identify someone who will receive the full amount of the Thompson family’s donation.
“It’s a wonderful gesture from some lovely people.”
Mark's wheelchair now has a weather canopy, which comes down in the rain.
Mark's bedroom got a Toy Story makeover.
