Our Stories - Hopscotch Holiday for Waverly Care and the Tullochan Trust

For children whose lives are a daily grind, arriving at the highland haven of Ardvullin must seem like a dream come true.

The Teddy Bear Foundation has been delighted to fund week-long trips to the children’s holiday centre on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, just south of Fort William.

Kids can go horse-riding, canoeing, climbing and taking in the majesty of local attractions like Glencoe and Ben Nevis.

The latest groups to benefit are Waverley Care and the Tullochan Trust.

Since it was set up almost 20 years ago, Waverley Care has provided help to 300 families affected by HIV or Hepatitis C.

Group support is given to children aged four to 16 and the trip to Ardvullin is seen as the highlight of the year.

Nichola Frith, Waverley Care’s project manager, said:”These are children whose parents are either too tired or unwell to take them anywhere.

“If it wasn’t for this trip to Ardvullin, these kids basically would never get a holiday.”

The Tullochan Trust is based in West Dunbartonshire, identified as the third most socially deprived area in Scotland.

The Haldane project is based in one of the most disadvantaged housing estates and offers the highland trip to vulnerable youngsters aged eight to 11.

Project assistant Sheena Ballantyne said picking the lucky children is not easy.

She said:”Basically, everyone wants to go because they have heard how much fun they have at Ardvullin.

“But we have to stick to the kids we’re pretty sure won’t get a holiday unless they come with us.

“Sadly, some of the children we see have rarely been out of their own housing estate so imagine what seeing the highlands does to them!”

Previous groups to enjoy Ardvullin courtesy of the Teddy Bear Foundation include Glenboig Neighbourhood House in North Lanarkshire.

Their days were spent at beaches and at wildlife centres dotted around the west highlands

Little Bethan said:”My favourite thing was rock climbing because I didn’t know I could go that high.

“Thank you for taking us.”
